Review

As I sat down to watch the movie “The Zookeeper’s Wife”, I had no idea what to expect. However, as soon as the film began, I found myself drawn into the story and couldn’t look away until the very end. Based on a true story, “The Zookeeper’s Wife” tells the tale of Antonina Zabinski (played by Jessica Chastain) and her husband Jan (played by Johan Heldenbergh), who run the Warsaw Zoo during World War II. When the Germans invade Poland, they use the zoo for breeding German animals but eventually destroy it during a bombing raid. The Zabinskis then decide to use their property for something much more dangerous; they begin hiding Jewish refugees in their zoo.

This movie has it all- drama, romance, action, and even some comic relief. At its core, though, it is a story of extraordinary bravery and kindness in the face of horrific evil. The script is well-written and does an excellent job of conveying the fear and uncertainty that permeated every moment of life during wartime Europe.

Not only is there great writing in this movie, but there are also some fantastic performances by actors like Chastain and Heldenbergh. Their portrayal of Antonina and Jan Zabinski is both emotional and powerful; you can’t help but feel for them as they struggle to protect their guests from danger while also continuing to run their zoo.

One thing that struck me about “The Zookeeper’s Wife” is how well it balances different tones throughout its runtime. There are moments of intense danger and sadness coupled with lighter moments of joy that made me laugh out loud several times throughout my viewing experience.

Another aspect that makes this movie stand out is its incredible cinematography. Every shot feels carefully thought out, with beautiful visuals making every scene feel like a work of art rather than just another piece of footage.

In addition to being a great film on its own merits, “The Zookeeper’s Wife” is also an important historical piece that sheds light on the lesser-known stories of people who risked their lives to save others during World War II. This movie serves as a reminder that even in the darkest moments, there can be light and hope.

As with any movie, there are criticisms, but overall I found “The Zookeeper’s Wife” to be a powerful and moving film that I would highly recommend. Whether you’re a history buff or just looking for a compelling story, this movie has something for everyone.

It is not surprising that this film has garnered multiple award nominations in various categories such as Best Costume Design or Best Original Score. The music by Harry Gregson-Williams, especially during the more dramatic moments of the movie, is simply breathtaking and truly elevates this film to another level.

If you haven’t seen “The Zookeeper’s Wife” yet, I would highly recommend it. This is one of those films that stays with you long after the credits have rolled; it inspires you to be kinder and more compassionate in your own life and reminds us all that we are capable of doing great things even in the darkest of times.
