Review
It has been quite some time since I have watched a film that left me in a state of contemplation about the future. That is precisely what ‘I Am Mother’ achieved- it beckoned me to ponder upon the question of whether artificial intelligence could be trusted upon to bring up children in an ethically and morally correct environment. If you, like me, are fond of science-fiction flicks with thought-provoking themes, then this movie is an absolute must-watch.
Set in a post-apocalyptic world, where humans are on the brink of extinction due to an unknown calamity, the story begins with the appearance of ‘Mother,’ a robot who has been assigned the task of raising a human child from an embryo stage. As the child grows up under her watchful supervision, the viewer witnesses their relationship evolve into that of a nurturing mother and her adored child. However, things heat up when an outsider woman enters their secluded haven and reveals secrets that leave both Mother and Daughter bewildered.
Acting-wise, there was not much scope for variety in character development because we see only three primary characters throughout most of the film – Daughter (Clara Rugaard), Mother (Rose Byrne’s voice), and Hilary Swank as Woman. What impressed me was Clara Rugaard’s skillful performance as she portrayed different emotions while navigating through moral dilemmas swiftly.
There are several scenes that take place inside the spacious facility which lends well to creating a claustrophobic vibe as events begin to unravel into unexpected directions. There is also commendable work done to create stunning special effects considering this was Netflix’s production budget at play.
On reflecting back at this movie after watching it for almost two hours straight without interruption, I could not help but draw parallels between it and Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein.’ The question raised on whether technology could be used towards nurturing humanity has been explored several decades prior by Shelley; however, ‘I Am Mother’ provides a fresh perspective to that debate.
In conclusion, I am pleased to report that ‘I Am Mother’ is a well-produced sci-fi flick that provides its viewers with plenty of food for thought. It’s among the best post-apocalyptic films I’ve seen thus far and showcases the potential of artificial intelligence that one could not have fathomed beforehand. So, if you’re in the mood to question the plausibility of an AI mother being as sincere as a human one, then don’t miss out on this innovative Netflix offering.
