Review

If you were a fan of the classic English novel, “The Railway Children,” get ready to hop aboard the nostalgia train because its sequel is finally here! Directed by Morgan Matthews and written by Simon Nye, “The Railway Children Return” is a heartwarming tale that will take you back to a simpler time.

Set in the 1930s, the story picks up from where the original book left off. We are reunited with Bobbie (played by Jenny Agutter), now all grown up and working for the Women’s Voluntary Service. Her siblings Peter and Phyllis have both gone off to pursue their own dreams, leaving her alone in London with her memories of life in Yorkshire.

But when Bobbie receives news that her mother has fallen ill, she rushes back to their old home in Oakworth with her own daughter, also named Phyllis (Dixie Egerickx). Much has changed since they left, including the construction of a new railway line that threatens to destroy their beloved Three Chimneys cottage.

As they try to save their home and reconcile with their past, the family meets a new cast of characters who are just as charming as those from the original story. There’s Jim (Sheridan Smith), a train driver who becomes Bobbie’s love interest; Mr. Mulliner (Tom Courtenay), the eccentric station master; and Countess de Toulouse-Lautrec (Nina Wadia), a French noblewoman hiding out in Oakworth.

It’s easy to see why “The Railway Children” has captured so many hearts over the years, and this sequel does not disappoint. Matthews does an excellent job capturing the essence of Edwardian England while highlighting the challenges faced by women during wartime.

Nye’s script strikes just the right balance between humor and emotion without feeling overly sentimental. It’s clear that he respects E. Nesbit’s original work but also understands that modern audiences may desire a little more nuance.

The cast is stellar, particularly Agutter, who brings a depth and maturity to Bobbie that only comes with age. Smith is delightful as Jim, providing just enough romantic tension without detracting from the story’s central theme of family.

Egerickx is also impressive as the young Phyllis, holding her own alongside veteran actors and bringing a fresh perspective to the story. It’s refreshing to see a young girl portrayed as curious and adventurous rather than merely there for cute comic relief.

The score by Alexandra Harwood perfectly captures the mood of each scene, and the cinematography by Erik Wilson is stunning. The Yorkshire countryside has never looked so lush, and the railway scenes evoke a sense of wonder and nostalgia.

It’s hard not to compare “The Railway Children Return” to its predecessor, but it stands on its own merit. The film is both a love letter to fans of the original book and an enjoyable standalone story that will appeal to all ages.

Critics have praised the film for its authenticity, heartwarming storyline, and excellent performances. However, some have criticized it for being too predictable or formulaic. Still, it’s hard not to be charmed by this delightful movie that reminds us of the power of family and community in challenging times.

“The Railway Children Return” may not win any major awards or change the face of cinema forever, but it doesn’t need to. Sometimes all we need is a little bit of heartwarming nostalgia to remind us that even in troubled times, there are still things that connect us all – like trains chugging through England’s green hillsides.
