My dearest readers, I must confess that I have recently had the pleasure of viewing a delightful cinematic gem by the name of “Little Boxes”. This charming tale of modern life is sure to delight and entertain all those who possess a love for heart-warming comedies.
With a screenplay by Annie J. Howell and an enchanting score by indie musician, Michael Marshall, “Little Boxes” tells the story of a family who leave their comfortable life in New York City to start afresh in a small town in Washington state. The family consists of husband and wife, Mack (played by Nelsan Ellis) and Gina (played by Armani Jackson), and their young son, Clark (played by the talented up-and-coming actor, Connor Jessup).
As the family begins to settle into their new home and community, they are confronted with the realities of small-town life and the unexpected challenges it brings. From navigating cultural differences to dealing with the occasional judgements from locals on their perceived outsider status, this family is certainly put through their paces.
The acting from all involved is truly top-notch. Nelsan Ellis shines as Mack, bringing a raw emotional intensity to his portrayal as he grapples with his own sense of identity within his new surroundings. Armani Jackson is also excellent as Gina – her performance capturing the nuanced struggles of a mother trying to balance her own needs with those of her family.
The supporting cast are equally impressive – Melanie Lynskey delivers an exceptional performance as Mack’s colleague in academia – bringing depth and pathos to what could have been just another one-dimensional character.
Beyond its wonderful performances lies the film’s beautiful cinematography – transporting us effortlessly from urban landscapes to serene rural vistas with ease.
And yet, despite its many strengths, some may find fault with “Little Boxes”. Some may critique its traditional narrative structure or its seemingly uncomplicated themes. However, I believe these criticisms miss the very essence of what makes this film so special – its ability to capture, in the most charming and authentic way, the complexities of modern life.
“Little Boxes” is not afraid to confront the difficulties that arise when one tries to navigate varying cultural, social and economic contexts. It does so with humour and heart – reminding us of the importance of empathy and compassion when confronting our own sense of identity in relation to others.
In short, “Little Boxes” is a classic tale of a family adapting to their new environment – a coming-of-age moment for all involved. And just as our heroines and heroes do in Jane Austen’s novels, Mack and his family must learn to overcome adversity, embrace their new surroundings, and ultimately find happiness in what may seem like the most unexpected of places.
I urge you all to take a chance on this wonderful film – you will not be disappointed.
