With this film, Mitchell ventures into uncharted sci-fi territory, armed with a visionary imagination that manages to fuse punk rock culture and alien life forms into a visually stunning masterpiece.
The story of “How to Talk to Girls at Parties” takes place in London in 1977 during the height of the punk rock movement. Our protagonist Enn (played by Alex Sharp) is a shy teenager who wants nothing more than to be part of this subculture. After attending a local party with his friends Vic (Abraham Lewis) and John (Ethan Lawrence), Enn finds himself stumbling upon an abandoned house where he hears music coming from upstairs. Obeying his curiosity, he heads upstairs only to discover that he has stepped into an alien invasion party instead.
The aliens are part of a group called “The Beautiful People,” led by Queen Boadicea (Nicole Kidman), who have come down to Earth on their final tour before returning home. Meanwhile, we get lost in the movie’s psychedelic visuals that depict an intergalactic landscape unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. From the Beautiful People’s flamboyant androgynous costumes to their eerie and fascinating music, “How to Talk to Girls at Parties” is a feast for the eyes that will keep you mesmerized from beginning to end.
As for the cast, it’s hard not to get lost in the extraordinary performances of Alex Sharp and Elle Fanning as Enn and Zan. Sharp skillfully portrays his character’s quirky individualism while capturing his adolescent awkwardness with a surprising tenderness. And Fanning? While purists may argue over how faithful it remains to Gaiman’s work, there’s no denying that Mitchell has created something new altogether with “How to Talk to Girls at Parties”!
