It tells the story of a very unusual love affair between two lonely souls, Gloria (Lola Dueñas) and Michel (Laurent Lucas), who embark on a killing spree together.
At first glance, the storyline seems simple enough. Michel meets Gloria through an online dating site. They start dating and quickly fall in love. However, we soon realize that there are some serious issues with these two characters. Gloria is deeply insecure and manipulative while Michel is a pathological liar who is addicted to sex.
The film’s plot is loosely based on the true story of Raymond Fernandez and Martha Beck, also known as “The Lonely Hearts Killers.” The couple used personal ads to lure unsuspecting victims into their web of lies and eventually killed them for their money. The filmmakers take this dark and twisted story and turn it into something truly unique.
The performances by Lola Dueñas and Laurent Lucas are outstanding. They both give nuanced portrayals of two damaged people who find solace in each other’s company. Dueñas’ performance as Gloria is particularly impressive as she manages to make us feel sorry for this deeply disturbed character.
