For those who don’t know, The War of the Rohirrim follows King Helm Hammerhand and his loyal Rohirrim as they battle against evil forces threatening their land. This story takes place 260 years prior to The Lord of the Rings trilogy, making it a standalone film that will set a new tone for audiences.
The news was announced by New Line Cinema on June 10th, which marked Tolkien Reading Day – a day dedicated to celebrating J.R.R. Tolkien’s life and work. While some might have expected some sort of celebration or recognition post on social media, fans were thrilled to instead discover that something much bigger was in store.
As far as plot details go, not much has been revealed at this time. However, we do know that Philippa Boyens (one of Peter Jackson’s co-writers on the LOTR trilogy) will be involved with the project. There’s always a risk of nostalgia overpowering creativity or producers being too influenced by the past.
