Oh, dear readers! I have seen a film so intriguing and captivating that it has left me in a state of pure admiration. A film so brilliant that only the great bard himself could do it justice – In the House.
The story is set in modern-day France, yet it feels like a tale from Shakespearean times. A young boy, Claude, infiltrates the life of his classmate Raphaël’s family by writing about them in his essays for his literature teacher, Germain. Plots are hatched, secrets are revealed, and power struggles ensue.
The movie is brilliantly written by director François Ozon who also made Swimming Pool and 8 Women. It is based on the play The Boy in the Last Row by Spanish playwright Juan Mayorga.
Claude (Ernst Umhauer) captures Germain’s (Fabrice Luchini) attention with his writing. Raphaël’s mother Esther (Emmanuelle Seigner) works as a gallery assistant. Esther seems to be both attracted to Claude and threatened by him at the same time.
Raphaël’s father (Denis Ménochet), on the other hand, is less enthusiastic about Claude’s interference into their lives. The tension between him and his son creates an interesting dynamic as the pair battles for control.
Germain becomes more involved with Claude’s writing as he begins to take on a mentor role in his life. The two share a love for books and literature which makes their bond even stronger.
In one scene, Germain recites one of Shakespeare’s famous quotes from Hamlet: “To be or not to be.” He then critiques Claude’s essay saying: “This is mediocre at best!”
Throughout the film, Ernset Umhauer delivers an outstanding performance as Claude with just enough mystery to keep us yearning for more information about him.
Emmanuel Seigner also shines as Esther whose character battles with her own desires and the expectations of society.
The film is beautifully shot by Jérôme Alméras, who captures the claustrophobic atmosphere of Raphaël’s home. The score by Philippe Rombi is delicate yet haunting.
In the House was a commercial success in France, winning the Prix Louis Delluc for Best Film and was nominated for a total of 13 César Awards, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Actor.
It is a film that explores themes of power, temptation, and envy with an added touch of Shakespearean theatrics. It leaves us questioning just how far we would go for a taste of forbidden fruit.
The final scene sees Germain reading Claude’s latest essay in class. The camera then pans over to Claude who smirks as if he knows something we don’t. And that’s what makes In the House so good – it leaves us wanting more.
